Oh my god you’re back! I’m so glad! Everyomne thought the comic was dead! We deserve an explanation lmao! But welcome back!

    • wr4ith0

If you follow white noise long enough you’ll notice it does this. Life gets in the way sometimes. The longest hiatus I’m aware of was a couple years.. By now I’ve come to trust she’ll find her way back to it eventually. Like an ember lighting in the dark.

Ps. For anyone interested in another long running sporadically updated comic kagerou is an amazing Technicolor mind screw.

      • Celia Fernandez

I agree… This isn’t her job and it shouldn’t become an obligation for her… I don’t mind waiting, I now she’ll come back eventually and everyone should understand that there are priorities in life and uploading an online comic ins’t top one of most people (unless it’s profitable for them, and that rarely happens…)

        • Pandagirl2303

I understand that of course! What I mean by an explanation is just an update on whats up and if she has any olans for the comic in the future. Life and personal wellness is of course first priority and I am glad when writers take time to themselves! When they come back I just like to see what plans are for the future if any are made! It’s reassuring to me I suppose to see a break helping people get their flow back together! Sorry if I rambled. I tend to do that lmao!

          • Sean Long

I agree with the Pandagirl. I mean, for all we knew, the artist had been run over by a bus and was only publishing updates in the afterlife forevermore. Just the occasional poke at this website so we knew she was still _alive_, and did intend to (eventually) get back to the comic, would have been very, very appreciated.

          • wr4ith0

It’s nice to have on an emotional level, and offers some rapport with the artist, but receiving a free online comic doesn’t really entitle us to … well anything.

There is something more of an argument to be made when an artist is selling their work and you are a paying patron. But even then people have a right to become someone who they weren’t when they started the work or step away when it becomes too much. Otherwise we’re asking for emotional labor on top of the work of a free comic.

Long, unannounced hiatuses aren’t for every reader, and I do totally get that. And if you’d like them I could probably provide you 10-15 webcomics in this vein that are currently much more active. But they do come with the territory for free online works as often as not.

          • Sean Long

Ah, but here’s the hole in your counter-point:

She HAS been getting paid for the comic. She has an account with Patreon, and all through the hiatus she was getting _at least_ $85/month (that’s where it stood a week or so before updates resumed). Before the hiatus began, I think she was up to $150/month (including a couple dollars from me, through about the fourth month of the hiatus IIRC).

And neither Pandagirl nor I are saying “update or else”; we’re not saying she HAS to continue the comic. Rather, I think we’re saying something much closer to “gee, it would be nice if the artist just _said_ something every couple of months so we knew they were alive and still planned to return to this project”.

Not because she’s obligated to us – but just as a matter of _simple courtesy_. And especially since she was, and _is_, getting paid by at least some of her readers.

          • wr4ith0

I do tend to forget about patreon. The fact that it’s not just a simple payment for work, but intended as a stipend and an investment in seeing what work an artist might produce changes the equation.

I would like to apologize to you Sean and anyone else who supports this wonderful comic. Whether or not the artist is obligated to respond, you have every right to check in on what might come of that investment.

As someone who dabbles in content creation myself that makes me wonder if it’s possible to put patreon accounts “on hiatus” when you go on hiatus…

          • Sean Long

The button on the comic’s page, directly says “Support [White Noise] on Patreon”. The patreon page itself, says she is “creating comics”,a nd talks exclusively about WN – using artwork from the site, summarizing the setting.

Clearly, donating there isn’t just a generic “support this person making whatever art strikes their fancy”, instead it’s “support this artist _making White Noise comics_”. Which, during the hiatus, she didn’t do.

I think she really should have posted some sort of updates as to _why_ she wasn’t doing that – to the Patron page, if not here (and if you’re posting something to one, there’s little reason not to copy-paste the text to the other too).

Or, if it was failing health or a family emergency (or some other crisis that would understandably preclude communication), then she should post something _now_, since that crisis has apparently passed.

I’m not _angry_ about it, mind. Just mildly disinclined to renew my Patreon pledge in the immediate future.

          • anonim

It’s not a matter of who owes whom. This is another question and it is pointless to argue.

The author’s activity in the network is incredibly low. She has pages on different resources and her own site. The site is well done. It is always available. It costs money and time. But she does not use all this. Unusually, unclear. And if the break is long, it makes you worry.

      • https://kalietha.tumblr.com Kalietha

I realize this is a long time later, but I don’t suppose you have a link for Kagerou? I used to follow it, lost the link when one of my computers died a few years back, and my periodic google searches fail to find it…I had assumed the site was taken down, at this point, honestly.

        • wr4ith0

Looks like http://www.kagerou.org/ is official. Luka has changed Domains like 3 times now I think? Luka posts individual pages on their patreon and publishes on the website when a chapter is finished. They’re updating a page or two a month and have been working on chapter 52 since 2016. I respect that kind of dedication.

If you’re looking for more binge materials, The Sword Interval and Stand Still Stand Silent are both amazing.

PS. noticed on your feed godslave was still active. Pleasant surprise that.

          • https://kalietha.tumblr.com Kalietha

Godslave definitely still active XD My feed is nowhere near being my full list; I’ve been trying to gradually track down all the (hundreds) of comics I used to follow that got lost over the years and add the ones I can to my feed, and keep the rest in a folder with UPDATED links. It’s proving very problematic, since fully half my old links have turned out to lead to nonexistent places now…and it doesn’t help that I don’t always remember which title goes to what, and have bits of scenes in my head that I remember but don’t remember the name of the comic or characters…which is not at all helpful in tracking them down, especially when there are a lot of comics the description could technically apply to.

          • https://kalietha.tumblr.com Kalietha

Wait. How can you see my feed?

          • wr4ith0

i saw this because i got an email from disquis. the link went to your disquis profile. I’ve read 300+ webcomics, so if you want feel free to hit me up. I’ve got a link to the best of em at http://dakkapress.com/wp/ a podcast i was doing with some friends in the sidebar, as was done in the elden days

          • daedalus117

Wait a second, I recognize that comic! Holy crap, I’ve been wondering where Kagerou went for ages, but I couldn’t remember the name. I didn’t expect to see it randomly in the comments of another comic from my dark past that I nearly forgotten about. Thanks for that.

  • Ailbhe

So glad to see a new page ^_^

Maybe one day we will be in our 90’s finishing a comic that we started reading in the 90s but unfortunately this comic is not that old, it just feels that way if you hit the refresh everyday :p

    • http://nolanfa.tumblr.com/ Fal

Maybe one day we’ll be in our 2000’s finishing a comic that we started reading in the 2000s…

  • DanialArin

    Welcome back! We’ve missed you!

  • Mark Linimon

Oh gosh, I had given up.

  • FourQ

I just discovered White Noise. Having absolutely no interest at all in reading comics that only update sporadically, the first thing I do is check out the “about” page when I find a new comic. In this case, I saw the line about “updates every Monday starting October 2014” and was dumb enough to believe it, so I went ahead and read through from the beginning. Oh well.

  • SoulDessin

I am glad to see that you are back as well. I did a double take when I saw the update in my RSS feeds.

  • Bluefire

    Aw… last page =P
Posted around six months ago if I’m not mistaken.
Hopefully the hiatus is close to ending…

    • dde

      Prepare for a long wait

    • Psiberkiwi

      *six months later* Nope…

      • raven0ak

        10 months later, still nope

  • CrazedKing

    Wee a post!

  • Atros

Aw. Saw a link to this comic and was all “Oh hey, I used to read that! I wonder if they ever started updating again!”. Came over, woot! New page!

… One new page. From nearly a year ago. Bugger.

    • ShoelessJane

hah! Same! Only two years ago, now…

  • WickedSilence

Well i think its time to write this off as a dead comic.

    • Robert Nowall

      I’m not giving up hope.

      • Targetdrone

ya well, some of us only have 30-40 years left tops, thats not enough to finish the chapter at that rate sadly :(

  • Robert Nowall

If there’s anybody out there, Merry Christmas!

    • http://www.id4749458.sexylb.website melissamagnessmorris

      robertnowall I do not agree

      • Robert Nowall

That’s the beauty of it. You don’t have to agree. You can wish me a Merry Christmas or say “Bah, humbug!”

  • Dr. Headcrab

Happy Valentine’s Day to anyone out there who might be reading this.

My week’s been a bit rough, so I hope all of yours is going better. Might be months before anyone even sees this but hey. I like to keep the hope alive that this place might come back to life some day. If you ever check the cbox up above, you’ll see me there a bit more frequently as Shriek Fish.

Cheers to all of you still lurking out there.

    • Robert Nowall

I’m still lurking; it usually catches my eye when the message count goes up. Happy V-Day, and Presidents and St. Patrick’s and Easter and on and on…

    • Adriano

      I keep my eyes open.
Hope you’re having a good time, happy late valentines ahah

  • Dr. Headcrab

Heyo, folks. It’s your friendly neighborhood Headcrab here… reminding all of you fine people to have a Happy Hiatus.

The weather outside is cold, the sky is clear, and it’s been just about the absolutely worst
winter I’ve seen in my life… but so long as we keep on trucking together, I have faith that we may yet live to see this story continue!

I, personally, am looking forward to spring. That beautiful time of year where the flowers bloom, the trees regain their leaves, and the zombies smell bad enough that it’s almost impossible for them to sneak up on you.

Until next update, Praise Be to the Damned Spider!

  • Dr. Headcrab

It’s 3.10.2019 here now, and we’re still moving right along through this long seemingly-endless hiatus. I don’t know if any of the old commenters who keep track of these things are around anymore, but I’d love to know if we surpassed the previous record for longest hiatus yet. It’s starting to feel like perhaps we have.

Not that that means the comic is well and truly dead, it’s just a milestone worth noting for future usage in the event that the comic resumes only to experience another hiatus soon after!

Anyway, things are going as well as they can for me personally. Life has thrown some unexpected curve-balls. The weather is getting a little bit better, although today saw sleet and some snow whipping around at high speeds. The world’s in an awful state, but here in the comfort of this small corner of the internet we holdouts are still together waiting for the day the comic updates!

It could be sooner than you think! Or, maybe longer than you think!

Best not to think about it too much and just have a happy hiatus!

    Cheers, folks!

    • Tea Love

Still in my ‘infrequent updates’ folder, not my hiatus folder. 😉

  • Dr. Headcrab

Good afternoon, folks! Today is 3.21.2019, and things are still pretty much the same around here! As we continue to endure the Hiatus, I shall keep popping my head in to give irregular updates as to various interesting tidbits and some of my own personal goings on.

Speaking of personal goings on, yesterday I rode in an ambulance for the first time in my life. Nothing life-threatening or anything, as it turns out… but better to be on the safe side rather than sitting around waiting for a heart attack or some kind of diabetic episode or something like that. Definitely an eye-opening experience. I’m feeling particularly inclined to get my diet and exercise plan back on track. The 911 lady was super nice, as were the police officer and paramedics on the scene. The cat seemed to like them. She rubbed on the officer’s leg a bit before jumping up onto the coatrack and pondering climbing onto one of the paramedics’ heads. The weather is starting to feel a little more like spring and less like winter, which is nice… because I’m all winter’d out. It’ll be nice to just go out and take a walk when I’m feeling up to it.

There’s been little hopeful news concerning the ongoing awfulness of the world. I do however see periodic short snippets of stories that remind me that just because the world’s gone crazy doesn’t mean everyone in it has too. Besides, there’s always this place… the corner of the internet dedicated to hopeful dreamers waiting patiently for an update to this comic’s story. And if that doesn’t give a person hope, what does?

Until next time, stay tuned! The update could come any time when you least expect it.

    Cheers.

  • Dr. Headcrab

    Good afternoon, fellow lurkers!

It’s April 3, 2019. Time for another check in. How’s everyone doing? I hope the day sees you well. As I’m sure you can see, the hiatus continues. Not much has changed around here. The cbox is a little quieter these days, though that’s not to say people are giving up! Just not checking in with the frequency which they sometimes do. There’s an ebb and a flow to these things.

I on the other hand am here every day. Sometimes more than once! For those of you who might be wondering why, it’s because this comic holds a very special place in my heart. Way back when I first discovered that webcomics were a thing, I stumbled across this one during a time when I really needed the distraction. It absolutely captivated me. The art style, the story, it just resonated with me in a way that only a few stories ever really do.

So I’ll continue to stand my silent sentry over this place, waiting and conversing with whoever among you pass through, most likely on your way to other more active communities, for as long as it takes. Either the comic will one day resume, the site will one day disappear, or they might both outlast me… but regardless.

It’s shaping up to be a fairly nice day, today. I haven’t been sleeping well, but yesterday I managed to lie down and get through most of the evening before waking up. Hopefully that means I’ll actually be up to getting some of the work I need to do started. I’ve been dragging my feet up until now because I know that once I get started… the emotional stress behind it is all gonna come rushing back again. But it’s probably about time I faced it down head-on.

For now, stay tuned as always! White Noise isn’t dead, it’s napping. You never know when the update might come, and you don’t wanna miss it!

(That’s when all the hold-outs come back.)

  • SF

    Hope dies last they say.

    • Genebko

      I’m with you.
This doesn’t seem like it’s coming back. Unless some updates start happening (or at least an update that says there will be updates), I’m moving this from my hiatus folder to a sarcophagus.

  • Shaggy

    Darn, I caught up. :(
    Great comic! ^_^

  • Genebko

Well, a year is a decidedly long enough period to wait for an update.
I’ll have to scratch this off the list and move on. Too bad. This was proving to be quite an interesting story.

  • Pandagirl2303

Wow. Over a year. I hope everything is going well over there. Imma need to do a reread when (and if) this boots up again. I hardly remember whats happened so far.

  • A Moody Pig

The Date is Sunday, July 14, 2019, and man this comment section has been looking barren recently. If you are either long-time readers who come back for hope or nostalgia, people who check back because they realize “oh yeah white noise is a thing that exists”, and the people who are still checking in despite the George R.R Martin level update schedule (special shout out to Mr. HeadCrab) I can be sure of one thing and that is that all of you love this comic. Personally, for me, this comic has gotten me through many rough patches and at the time I thought it was one of the greatest things I have ever read. And years later after scouring the web from most hidden of diamonds in the rough to the worst, brain-melting garbage I safely say it still is. I don’t know if the artist is dead or just moved on the other things. If she did move on to other things, well I don’t blame her. A past work should not hold someone back just because other people love it. But long story short I love this comic and If the artist, for some reason, is reading this then thank you. If this is the comics last update then so be it. It will be nice to imagine Wren looking out onto the ocean forever.
(But I still hope that it updates)

  • Dr. Headcrab

    Ahoy, there, folks!

The date is July 25th, 2019, and the Longest Break continues.

It’s been a while since my last update! Life has kept me busy and without much time to commentate, but don’t let that fool you into believing I’m gone! I’m alive and well, as too I hope are all of you! As you can see, things are a little sparse around here. A lot of the regulars are clearly in their ‘Long Term’ checking schedules, but I remain and I shall remain until they lock the doors and turn off the lights for the last time.

I don’t have much to add today, I’ve got to get back to work quickly so it’s gonna be a short one. Keep your eyes peeled here, as usual, for further updates in the future though! Once I have more time, I’ll get back to periodically popping in and commenting randomly about whatever stuff is new in the world.

Lacking any other more personalized news, how about this: apparently they’re making a TV series version of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for Hulu? What’s up with that, man? Not that I’m gonna object. I’m a fan of all things Douglas Adams. It’s just weird to think that there’s going to be yet another version of this thing out there.

I dig it. Anyway, that’s all for me.

As always, stay tuned! White Noise isn’t dead… it’s just playing hard to get! Keep your eyes peeled. You never know when it’ll spring back to life, and you’ll kick yourself if you miss it! Until then, take care and have a happy hiatus!

  • FrostGear

Been awhile since this updated. Saw a post on reddit for this and was like I remember that wonder if it updated. Sadly not yet but I will check back occasionally hopefully mad will show up again soon, till then we will be watching.

  • Aaron of Odd

I just decided to go though my list of subscribed webcomics and noticed White Noise hadn’t posted in 17 month. I decided to check the website directly and yes there was a hiatus but also the RSS feed changed at some point :( Well at least I have a ton of posts to catch up on now. In a perfect world RSS could tell you when feed died but the content was still out there. (or I would do maintenance on my reader more often.)

    • Aaron of Odd

Or not. Seems the new White Noise feed I found was for a different White Noise webcomic. http://www.white-noise-comic.com :(

  • Dr. Headcrab

    Hello, hello, hello!

The date is August 16, 2019, and we’re still riding on through the Longest Break without fail! Today I decided I wanted to do something different. Today I decided that from now on, my little updates here will involve going back into the ARCHIVE and pulling out a random page to discuss.

    Today’s page is: https://whitenoisecomic.com/comic/page-10-chapter-3/

Page 10 of Chapter 3. Why, you might ask? Because I said so!

Page 10 of Chapter 3 is the moment where Wren learns what he is and why he is. It’s a pretty big reveal, really, though it doesn’t really do much to alleviate any of the mystery behind what’s going on. There’s still a lot of unseen powers at play here, and the tension is getting pretty thick between our protagonist and company. There’s a real sense of dread underlying this page and the ones coming before it, leading up to a pretty upsetting turn at the end. I really enjoyed chapter 3. A lot of things were all happening at once, and the mysteries were really compelling, but we also got some answers. Not many, but some real answers. Probably the first real answers that hooked me on the idea there WERE answers to be had.

Anyway! Go back and take a look at Chapter 3. Also take a look at the artwork back then, and see how it’s evolved over time compared to the likes of Chapter 11. That’s always a pretty fascinating thing to see.

That’s all I’ve got for today, but stay tuned! The Greatest Hiatus-t could end at any moment, and you don’t wanna miss it! Until then, I’ll be here lurking in the shadows… or as ShriekFish in the Cbox!

    Have a good one, peeps!

    I really miss this comic.

Wow. 2 years. Shame. I hate to do it but I think after 2 years of having this tab open on my phone I need to let it go. Spam me with replies if we get an update, but I can’t leave it here any longer.

    • spikeball

Here is your requested update notification reply. :)

  • https://kalietha.tumblr.com Kalietha

New reader here – just got pointed at this comic today and read it straight through. FANTASTIC comic, wonderful character building, I love the realistic after-reactions to traumatic events (most fiction seems to either go full angst harping on them, or gloss over it as if it didn’t affect the character at all long-term), and was sad to see how long it had been since an update – but as I noticed while I read that periodic hiatuses followed by spurts of updates, I have hope, and will definitely be adding this to my feed.

Thank you for the wonderful imagination-fodder you have provided thus far, and I hope knowing you still have interested people out there will inspire you to continue!

EDIT: -cough- Or rather, add to my non-RSS bookmark folder, since apparently there is not currently a functioning RSS.

  • http://www.vanstry.net John Van Stry

Do you think you could just write a paragraph or three wrapping up the story for us, so we at least know what was going on and why, and how it ended? Please give us some resolution, now that the comic is dead.
    Thank you.

  • Khenan Laudrien

The chat, it is gone. How are we now supposed to post our more or less crazy messages. We are doomed! Doomed I say

  • Dr. Headcrab

The loss of the CBOX has left me in an uncertain state…

It feels as though perhaps even I, the champion of the hopeful still clinging to a possible return, should admit that this is the end. The final death. The hiatus eternal. For now, I refuse to accept that fate. I will hold out a bit longer, in hopes that perhaps it is but a glitch or an error and not the last nail in the coffin.

I, Doctor Headcrab, AKA ShriekFish to those of you who know me from the CBOX, shall remain until the lights turn off and the doors are shuttered for good. But even my optimism has limits… and I find myself afeared that that day may soon be on the horizon.

Until then, fellow friends, I wish you well.

    • Kathrynzano

I’m still hanging in there, and I know we’re not the only two. Chin up, Dr. Crabfish HeadShriek!

      Sorry, I couldn’t resist… 😛

I will remain until the page no longer loads. I fear however with the loss of CBOX that that day has taken a large step closer. I hope the day will not come. I hope that day will be fought off by a day (or many) with updates. But the fear grows stronger. The fear of hiatus totalis.

I will not declare it dead, as is popular with comics on hiatus. It is not dead as long as it loads.
    Let us all have hope.

I’m sticking it out, long as I can.

Me, too. I keep all of my old webcomics bookmarked until the pages show up as an error. There’s nothing to lose by checking every once in a while.

No matter how long the hiatuses (hiati?) may be, I never feel animosity towards creators who share their work out of passion for creativity. I’m just grateful they do. :)
