Though cruel can simply mean incredibly boring or out of your area of interest.
I’ll happily read a few thousand pages that I want to read, but when I’m not interested even a relatively short and non-text heavy comic can be cruel.

Do you mean can’t read for class or shouldn’t read overall?
If it’s shouldn’t overall, definitely read them all, it’s either religious nutjobism to keep them from you or trying to keep you from questioning things (often related to nutjobism).
